A Reaper at the Gates

A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Strange how monsters can reach from beyond the grave, as potent in death as they were in life.”

The series was amazing from the very start. In all the books so far, Tahir uses words wise enough to reach the minds of the readers and just capture it to the fullest. I was engrossed in the books from the very start.

The series gets nastier and only darker with each book. There is a ton of abuse throughout. I honestly get really frustrated when women are treated like objects in a society even if it's not real. It is not right. I guess some authors just use it as an element to raise awareness of a sort. It is laughable how some women are treated like animals and the others are feared. Some aspects are just weighed by the nature of the origin of the person. In this case, the land of scholars is under the conquerors. The things just keep getting worst and worst.

Elias and Laia are both embers in ashes. As such, they must raise. They are fallen, but they will raise, hopefully.

Personally, I felt that the book flowed nicely. Each paragraph was captivating. The perspectives changes with each chapter with respect to the characters. Each of this character has a past. Each has to endure another to meet the common goal.

The only thing I hated about 'A Reaper at the Gates' is the way Elias turned out to be. I know that things were not in the hands. The only alternative was him ending up dead. He is possessed by the magic. The very idea might seem absurd at first, but it does make sense. His mind is not completely his. Neither is his body. A sacrifice had to be made.

The story about Elias's mother is another story altogether. She is a wonderful role model for powerful women. However, she goes beyond the extreme of the spectrum. She is just too much. With each book I wondered, why does she hate her only child so much? Where did her humanity go? But then the world they live in, humanity does not really exist. It lays far beyond the catch. Wants can change people.

I am desperately waiting for the next book!
